STC

The Western Electric Company Ltd. of London opened an office in Pitt Street, Sydney in 1885, and was incorporated in 1912.

The company was an important importer of telephone equipement. During 1925 the company was extensively restructured due to ant-trust reles in various countries. Thus in 1926 STC established their first manufacturing opperations in Sydney producing telephone equipment, but also importing Kone speakers. These were 24 inches in diameter and used throughout the "new" Parliament House in Canberra.

STC rapidly expanded production, and when commercial radio broadcasts and import restrictions were sorted out were a major player.

They entered the television market, but like many others, were not successful and exited around 1962.

The company continued until 1987, and them became ALCATEL.
