Astor

This was the last in line of the Astor radio's with the "Mickey" name.
It has a one piece Bakelite cabinet, with holes for the direct tuning dial and a hole for the On/Off Volume control. There is of course a speaker grill. It is a simple, pleasing, design. Case colours were listed as Walnut, Cream, and Green for both the 6A8G and 6BE6 variants, although I have spoted light blue cases. Knobs were a contrasting colour or matched the outer shell.
The one I have is Walnut with Walnut knob.

I bought this set with the intention of placing AM and FM transmitters inside. However, I am having second thoughts.

I have since begun to restore this radio. However, 3 valves seem to be bad. The 6G8-G tests bad, as does the 6A8. The 6X5 gets red hot after 30 seconds which is also not a good sign.

Replacements have been ordered.

By the way, I do have the original back for the radio, and it is in good condition.

The Mickey HNQ below was part of five radios bought in early September, my main reason for buying was the Astor GA.

This radio isn't in the best of condition, although at first glance it looks OK. It has the common heat damage to the top, and the dial is badly cracked which will be hard to fix without the repair showing. It's also missing it's back.

This is the later version that uses the Miniwatt valves and a different tuning system of sliding ferrite coils that was dropped later, but used extensivly in car radios. This chasiss was carried over to the unloved plastic Mighty Mickey a few years later. Astor were obviosly cost cutting here as television approached
