About

Sharp, whose name derives from the invention of a mechanical pencil by the founder, became synonymous with the budget end of the consumer electronics market in the 1970s.

Never attaining greatness, Sharp launched the Optonica brand that  attempted to take the company up market. However, odd ball looks never really took off, and the company faded.

Since 2016 the company is owned by the huge Foxconn group. Sharp today make Point of Sale systems, Calculators, Microwave ovens, Laptop computers, and most importantly LCD panels.
