AWA Radiola

From the mid 1950s AWA updated their range, and the 573 replaced the 540.

The 573MA and it's twin the Hotpoint Z55ME were made from 1955 to 1958. The Hotpoint version is idential exept for the badge. This was a fairly short model run.

It has a very modern plastic cabinet that looks more late 1960s rather than mid 1950s. AWA had sorted out the plastics by this stage and grills and other parts don't suffer heat damage, although they are suseptial to burns and cracks.

This model is a large mantle or small table radio being much larger than the contemporary 467 etc. of the same period. It features a very rich sounding 5 x 7 inch speaker.

Valve (tube) line up is as follows: 6BE6, 6BA6, 6AV6, 6AQ5, and 6X4.

The AWA version was available in Fawn (Cream), Grey, Coral, and Blue. While the Hotpoint was available in Fawn and Brown.

My examples were bought from Ebay (grey) and the HRSA Canberra meeting in March 2024. Both needed very little work to bring them up to scratch.
