History

Healing was started by Alfred George Healing in 1907 building bicycles. He began importing Atwater Kent receivers in the early 1920s building a good business reputation. A decade later the impost of huge import duties meant that A. G. Healing were forced to make the decision to build their own radio's.
Post Second World War the company moved in electrical appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators, and vacuum cleaners. This may have been a decision based on the move by Australian Electrical Industries, makers of Astor radios.
A. G. Healing made some innovative designs, such as the L403E Moderne radio of 1950 (more commonly known as "Scales"). However, the materials used in the cabinets was inferior, and the circuit was as basic as they could get away with, meaning reception was only good in metropolitan high signal areas. Healing was content to sit in the middle of the market, never building the "best" quality equipment, but far from the worst.
The company was absorbed into the giant Rank Organisation in 1959, 4 years after television production commenced. The Healing brand died in 1975, again a victim of the removal of tariffs. It was replaced by Rank with imported NEC built televisions branded Rank Arena, and other Asian produced audio products.
Today, the Healing brand appears from time to time on junk electronics.
