Astor

GA - c. 1937

This was purchased as part of a four radio sale. (The others were an Astor Mighty Mickey" from 1958, a HMV 63-53 clock radio from the mid 1950s, and a Kriesler 11-60 Anniversary in Burgundy and gold.)

The GA was produced in 1937 into 1938, and then replaced by the CA with the "telephone dial" tuning. It is a Broadcast band and short wave receiver. The vertical parts of the dial are magnified with clear plastic lenses.

The basic chassis was available in 3 configurations, an A/C, a battery, and a vibrator for 32 volt farms. The cabinet could be the Bakelite here, or a large console with slightly different chassis layout.

The Astor GA was stored in a workshop following it's failure, probably in the 1970s. It has been repaired a number of times as the capacitors come from different periods.

While the knobs are not original, the cabinet is. (The right hand dial glass fell out driving home. The chassis has since cleaned up almost perfectly, no rust or other corrosion. Just a little flaking paint. All valves are present (6A7 6B7S_Aus 6B7 42 80).

It is yet to powered on, as I'll do a video on it when we come out of lockdown. Some of the components are placed in almost impossible places, I don't have the original knobs, etc., so it will be a big project.
