Healing "5"

I'm pretty sure this was given to me as junk. It was part of a large haul and he said take it or it goes in the bin.

The Healing "5"was an American Philco set that was licenced to Healing then modified to meet Australian conditions mainly with addition of a mains AC transformer. 

The chassis is a printed PCB that was either brought out to Australia from the USA or is a very early Australia made one.

The set has a 4" speaker coupled to three valves a 6BE6 converter, 6N8 IF and detector stage, and a 6BM8 for the audio output stages. The power supply consists of a transformer and a half-wave solid state rectifier.

Most of the time I spent trying to fix the tuning gang. It's rubbing/shorting at the lower end of the scale and not accessable because of the transformer. It would take more effort and time to remove than the set is worth.

I took Rod Champness advice in Silicon Chip - February 2001 issue, and put a shield on the 6BE6 with a shield roughly fashioned from a baked bean tin. The 6BE6 is inherently a very noisy valve. This reduces the signal from the 455 kHz that radiates, thus increasing the sensitivity at the lower end of the dial. With a NOS valve fitted the radio was noticeably quieter.

I had to get a complete set of valves as while they tested just OK, they were definitely weak performers.

Another mod was to put a 68pf ceramic capacitor across pins 2 and 3 of the 6BM8. This reduced the 455 kHz that leaks through and radiates back through the circuit and further desentises the radio.

Finally, while the case wasn't anywhere near as filthy as Rods, it did polish up quite well. I also made a new cardboard dial scale in Adobe Illustrator.

Never intended as anything more that a kitchen radio, the 412E is a pretty rubbish radio made to low standards and a low price. The Kriesler 11-99 Newscaster was a far supierior radio.
